In many countries like Japan, South Korea, and China, service staff receive fair wages and tipping is not part of the culture. In some places, it may even be seen as insulting. In European countries like France, a service charge (service compris) is typically included in the bill.

For a quick 20% tip, move the decimal point one place left to get 10%, then double it. For example, on a $45.00 bill: 10% is $4.50, doubled is $9.00 for a 20% tip. For 15%, calculate 10% and add half of that amount.

Traditionally, tips are calculated on the pre-tax amount since tax goes to the government, not the server. However, many people tip on the total for convenience. The difference is usually minor—on a $50 bill with 8% tax, tipping 20% pre-tax is $10, while post-tax is $10.80.

First, add the tip to the total bill, then divide by the number of people. For example, a $120 bill with 20% tip ($24) equals $144 total. Split among 4 people: $144 ÷ 4 = $36 per person. For uneven amounts, round up to avoid awkward change.
